Characterization of LiF/CuO Codoped BaTiO3 for Embedded Capacitor in LTCC modules
Prof. Kyoung Lee
Soonchunhyang University
Effective sintering aidditive for BaTiO3 was studied in order to use BaTiO3 as an embedded decoupling capacitor in high density multilayered LTCC modules for mobile communication systems and 3D printing modules. Among the studied additives, CuO/LiF mixture revealed as the most promising sintering aidditive for co-firing the BaTiO3 with the commercial low permittivity (r) LTCC sheet (MLS-22, NEG Co.). The temperature dependence of dielectric properties of BaTiO3 were successfully controlled by adjusting CuO/LiF amount, ratio, and sintering temperature. 10 wt% of LiF/CuO (1:1 ratio) doped BaTiO3 sintered at 860oC for 30min showed 95% sintering density. The room temperature permittivity (r) of LiF/CuO dope BaTiO3 was 1620 at 1 MHz, and the temperature coefficient of capacitance satisfied X5R specification. After co-firing this LiF/CuO doped BaTiO3 ceramic with MLS-22 sheet at 860oC, there was no crack formations at the layers boundary. Also chemical compatibility test revealed that there was no severe reaction between this LiF/CuO doped BaTiO3 and Ag electrode.
