Comparative Study between Conventional and Microwave Sintering of Large Strain Bi-Based Perovskite Ceramics
Mr. Jin-Kyu Kang
University of Ulsan
A comparative study has been attempted for microwave and conventional sintering of lead-free 0.96Bi1/2(Na0.82K0.18)1/2TiO3 – 0.04BaZrO3 (BNKT–BZ) ceramics. It was found that microwave sintering (MWS) that was 10 times faster than conventional sintering as can be seen in Fig. 1 could be successfully applied to the fabrication of the large strain Bi-perovskite ceramics with electric field-induced strains comparable to those obtained using conventional sintering (CFS). Although MWS resulted in smaller grained microstructures than CFS, the ferroelectric properties were stronger in MWS-derived specimens. As given in Fig. 2, the piezoelectric strain constant d33* of CFS-derived specimen reached a maximum value of 372 pm/V after sintering at 1100oC while that of MWS-derived specimen peaked at 950oC with d33* =324 pm/V.
